Solid Wood Maintenance

 SOLID WOOD

Our factory is located on the northern coast of Central Java Indonesia. We use FSC certified wood from government regulated teak plantation forests. Sourcing locally allows us to buy the whole log so that we can use every inch of the tree, with offcuts being used for our smaller accessories.

CHARACTERISTICS AND COLOURS

Teak wood is a premium timber with beautiful grains, universally known as the 'rolls royce of timber'. It is the the wood of choice for outdoor furniture as it is so hardwaring and durable, with very few timbers able to withstand harsh outdoor conditions. With our teak wood, we are able to stain it in different finishes such as black, oak and walnut stains so you can find your perfect wood tone. Please note the teak oak finish is similar to a darker aged oak (as opposed to a lighter/bleeched oak).

As teak is a natural product, each piece will vary in colour and grain. We use a 2 pac polyurethane sealer on our indoor tables to protect from spills and staining, and a natural water based sealer for outdoor. As wood is a natural product we cannot guarantee each piece will be the same colour, much like how 2 people will never be identical.  This applies for multiple items in the same order, as well as different/separate orders. The website images should be used as reference only as the actual tones/colours may differ slightly.

FINISH

Our timber tables and desks are finished with a polyurethane finish by Akzo Nobel (A premium Dutch finishing brand).  This is a hard surface to protect the wood. This still requires maintainance per below. All other items outside of tables are finished with an oil-based lacquer finish also by Akzo Nobel. If you would like to have your tables refinished after many years, we recommend using the same product or equal.

.

SOLID WOOD CARE

Solid wood can expand and contract in response to temperature changes. Small surface cracks and movement may occur and are a normal part of the characteristics of the wood. Please avoid extreme temperature, humidity or dry air variations, placing your furniture outside (if made for indoor), in direct sunlight, or directly underneath/in front of any air-conditioning vents or heaters. Please note cracks will appear over time in solid wood block items such as the bob block stool.

*If the item is too hot to hold in your hand, it is too hot to place directly on the timber. Please use a coaster or plate before placing hot items or drinks.

*It is recommended to wipe spills immediately, they should not be left overnight and/or for long periods of time. Please use a combination of mild soap and water to clean the wood surface. Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface in the direction of the grain, and do not use any metal scrubbers. If you use a detergent it needs to be non-corrosive, and suitable for cleaning wood.

*To remove any scuff marks in natural sealed timber you can use a polyxoil.

OUTDOOR WOOD

A water based sealer is applied on all Reddie outdoor timber for protection. Please note outdoor teak will naturally grey over time. Covering outdoor teak when not in use or placing it out of direct sunlight will protect it from the elements and delay the greying.

OUTDOOR WOOD MAINTENANCE

All timber outdoor furniture left exposed to the elements will experience some surface mould and discolouration from the environment.  To care / clean outdoor timber, firstly remove any dirt, cobwebs and leaves that have built up on the surface with a stiff bristled brush (follow the natural timber grain to avoid scratching).  Then use an eco-friendly teak cleaner and soft cloth to clean the timber, and wash it with a hose and allow to dry.  A water based sealer should be applied annually to maximise care and protection.

If you would like to eliminate the grey tones, lightly sand the surface and apply a water based sealer once a year. If the greying is not a problem, simply skip the sanding step and just apply a water based sealer.

WOOD ACCESSORIES

The bowls, spoons and chopping board are finished with a mineral oil, and may stain over time with liquid and food use. Apply a mineral oil periodically to keep in great condition.

ACCESSORIES MAINTENANCE

Hand-wash only with mild soap and water, do not put in the refrigerator or dishwasher. Don't let the items soak in water as this may cause the wood to crack, and dry right away with a soft cloth.  Stains may develop if anything moist is left on the wood for long periods. Extreme temperatures, humidity, and dry air can cause the wood to crack or warp, so store in a spot with good air circulation away from direct sunlight, heaters, and the oven.  Occasionally, rub with mineral oil to maintain the finish.

.

OTHER

select items are made using wood veneer (with mdf substrate) instead of solid wood. The same maintenance is required as solid wood.

Marble Maintenance

MARBLE We import our marbles from across the globe such as Europe and India. Each species varies in characteristics like grain size and texture. As we're always conscious of our environment, we ensure all marble offcuts don't go to waste and are given to the local community to build houses and footpaths.

CARARRA MARBLE Probably the most famous of the marble family. This marble from Italy has a beautiful bright white and grey colouring [honed standard finish].

NERO MARBLE Coming in as the 2nd most famous marble, is the Nero from Italy. This is for those that want a more moody feel to their home. The marble is finished in a semi gloss, and will be a showstopper [polished standard finish].

RED VEIN MARBLE An unusual marble we found a few years ago that took our breath away. It is a beautiful, heavily grained black polished marble with white and red streaks/veins, and teams well with bright colours or monochrome [polished standard finish].

LIMESTONE An architectural stone that is honed with a soft grey colouring. Perfect for the minimalist that likes clean palette. Please note limestone is a more porous stone, so more care will need to be taken when using [honed standard finish].

FOREST GREEN So retro, crazy and cool. This old but new again Serpentine Granite is quite the maximalist. With a rich green tone and strong veins of black, red, white and dark brown, it will the talk of your space. Please note this is a heavily textured stone, so will not appear perfectly smooth [polished standard finish].

CALACATTA VIOLA Oh Viola why so pretty. This classically Italian stone is just so pretty. Large swirls of deep to light purples and greys over a milky white base. Who wouldn't want a little Viola. Please note that this is a heavily textured stone, so will not appear perfectly smooth [polished standard finish].

MARBLE CHARACTERISTICS AND GRAIN

*Like you and I, each piece of marble is different. Each piece has grains that vary in size, scale, colour and texture. Marble is a gorgeous natural product so you may see varying characteristics. You may see some surface cracks on the grain, this is not a flaw but a characteristic of this marble. Calcium marks are also a natural part of marble, and not a flaw or quality issue. We buff them out where possible, but these blemishes may still exist.

CARE Marble is a natural stone material that is organically porous. Please ensure you wipe up spills immediately with a wet/damp cloth and wipe dry.  Use a cleaning solution that is suitable for marble, please avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners that may stain, corrode or tarnish marble surfaces. We always recommend using coasters and placemats for protection when placing items on marble.

We leave our marble in their natural state, as we find marble is best when left as mother nature intended, and creates a gorgeous patina over time. If you are concerned about staining, there are many off the shelf sealers that can be applied. Please apply an appropriate sealant and note that marble is still not 100% stain proof after being sealed due to its porous nature (sealant also cannot prevent etching or scratching). If needed please consult a specialist to make the application.

Do not use rough cloths or abrasive materials to wipe the marble as it can scratch the surface. Use a non-corrosive cleaning liquid or an appropriate marble cleaner, and wipe with a damp cloth in a circular motion. Then use a soft dry cloth to wipe any excess liquid.

Marble can be used in outdoor environments, but will be more prone to staining and etching (honed option recommended).  Marble can become stained from harsh weather and exposure to the outdoors, and regular care / maintenance is necessary to address the effects of weather and wear and tear.

Laminate, Metal and Polyurethane Maintenance

COLOURS

These colours in our standard pallette are available in a semi-gloss powdercoated metal, lacquered polyurethane and high pressure laminate (HPL).  This is so that you can have a perfect table that has a matching metal leg with laminate top, or a lacquered storage unit with a matching metal base. Please note we try to closely match the colours between materials, but colours may vary between material. We have provided the closest RAL number to each of our colours.

.

METAL

We powdercoat all of our metals, which is a dry finishing process covering the raw metal in a smooth colour. Metal pieces may have variations as our metal is welded by hand, because of this you may see small bumps and inconsistencies in the paint on the surface. This is not a defect but a characteristic of our handmade product.

.

METAL OUTDOOR

Depending on item we use alunimium or "galvanised" metal, which is a process to protect the metal from rust. Outdoor metals are all available in the same 10 powdercoat colours.  Please note galvanised metal may still rust if it has been chipped/scratched.  We can also use stainless steel if requested (price on application).

.

METAL BRASS

We use brass on select pieces, which will naturally patina/age over time. Please use Brasso metal polish or a similar product to maintain/clean.

.

METAL CARE

Wipe with a soft cloth and water. *Wipe off all excess water immediately. *Dust often. *Use an anti-rust spray on any outdoor metal that has chipped to prevent rust.

Galvanised metal may be cleaned using a water-based emulsifier, alkaline-based cleaners with a pH of 12 or lower or organic solvents. Then rinse the area with fresh water and simply wipe clean with a soft cloth.  Abrasive cleaners should be avoided. For products in a highly corrosive environment eg. coastal/marine, it is recommended the product be rinsed with potable water on a regular basis, particularly under sheltered conditions (i.e. not exposed to rain and sun).  Please note galvanised metal can be corroded or fade, and may still rust over time.

.

LAMINATES

We use a (HPL) High pressure laminate. This is a plastic surface that adds a pop of colour to your tables. Each one of our laminates are finished with a solid wood edge.

.

LAMINATE CARE

A damp cloth will remove spills, marks and greasy spots (water only, no need for detergent). Rub with a clean dry cloth to bring back brightness. Occasionally clean with mild dishwashing detergent. To remove heavy build-up of dirt use cleaners such as Mr Muscle, Windex or Ajax Spray n Wipe spray cleaners.

COLOURED POLYURETHANE

We use semi-gloss lacquered polyurethane (PU), which is applied as a multi-layered hard coated spray finish on plywood substrate.

.

POLYURETHANE CARE

Use warm soapy water with a damp cloth, and then wipe dry with a clean cloth. For deep grease stains use vinegar or a small amount of rubbing alcohol. For all other commercial cleaners we recommend you test product on a smaller inconspicuous area first.
